The story
Located at Neptunplatz in Köln, Masala Empire delivers authentic North and South Indian cuisine through a carefully calibrated kitchen. Owner Joel Vilangappara draws on his own South Indian heritage to guide the culinary direction, recruiting experienced chefs directly from India to manage daily operations. This direct approach guarantees traditional techniques translate smoothly into contemporary presentations. The team readily adjusts heat levels upon request, a practical detail that contributed to their recent Schlemmer Atlas recognition.
The menu divides clearly between northern and southern traditions, featuring slow cooked lamb curries, chicken basmati bowls, and seafood preparations. Guests frequently order house baked naan alongside pan roasted biryani served with cooling homemade raita. Fresh herbs and whole spices form the foundation of every sauce, while grilled paneer arrives with a distinctly fruity warmth. These precise seasoning choices keep the Indian cooking grounded and highly palatable.
Natural light floods the open dining area, highlighting a mix of polished metal fixtures and tropical timber accents. The design deliberately avoids stereotypical motifs in favor of clean lines and contemporary spatial planning. Patrons can also take advantage of the adjacent sun terrace during warmer months. As both café and evening bar, the venue maintains a steady flow of guests throughout the day.
