The story
NeoBiota in Cologne is a restaurant that redefines the day. Mornings bring a breakfast experience that goes beyond simple sustenance—available à la carte or as a three-course menu, it is playful and surprising. Evenings shift to creative casual fine dining: clear in concept, relaxed in atmosphere, and outstanding in flavour. This duality, executed with genuine craft and respect for ingredients, has earned NeoBiota a Michelin Recommended distinction.
The kitchen works with what nature provides, following a "root to leaf" philosophy. Menus are predominantly plant-based, built from fresh, regional produce sourced from partners who share the restaurant's values. On request, dishes are complemented with sustainably sourced fish or meat from ethical husbandry. No shortcuts, no chemical additives—just real taste and creative use of every ingredient. This is Modern Cuisine that is both progressive and grounded.
Chef Erik Scheffler and host Sonja Baumann lead a team they call the "Heldenbande" (hero crew). Together with restaurant manager Hanna Dischinger and sommelier Julian Grampp—whose career includes the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm and the legendary Traube Tonbach—they create an experience built on personality and genuine hospitality. The atmosphere is warm and unpretentious: no dress code, no formality, just good food in good company.
NeoBiota sits near Barbarossaplatz in central Cologne, with a leafy outdoor terrace and private parking in the building's own garage. The interior is cosy, and an exclusive chef's table is available. For groups of twelve or more, the restaurant can be booked for private events, from breakfast celebrations to evening dinners. Regular guest chef events (neo|philia) bring in talents from top kitchens across Germany for multi-hand dinners that are as convivial as they are memorable.
