The story

Stadtpfeiffer Leipzig – Modern French with a Michelin Star

A Restaurant with a Sense of Place

Stadtpfeiffer sits inside the Gewandhaus, Leipzig’s celebrated concert hall, on Augustusplatz. A friend once described it this way: “Effortlessly, the Stadtpfeiffer demonstrates world-class quality. I sit here at a table as if in Zurich or Milan… Leipzig timeless. The personal, the special – it lies on the plate.” That line captures the spirit of the place: refined yet unpretentious, rooted in its city but reaching far beyond.

Petra and Detlef Schlegel

The restaurant is the work of Petra and Detlef Schlegel, two hosts whose path here was anything but straight. They began in a workers’ club in Döbeln, then travelled through the small world of the DDR, learning their craft. After the Wall fell, they worked at some of Germany’s finest addresses – Traube-Tonbach, Brenner’s Park-Hotel, Landhaus Nösse on Sylt, the Grand Hotel Victoria Jungfrau in Interlaken, the Chesery in Gstaad. Their first independent venture was “Mona Lisa” in Leipzig-Connewitz, a beautiful but brief chapter. Then came the challenge: Stadtpfeiffer, the restaurant in the Gewandhaus.

Modern French Cooking, Recognised

The kitchen here focuses on Modern French cuisine, executed with precision and a clear respect for ingredients. The Michelin guide awarded the restaurant a star for high-quality cooking, a recognition that feels earned rather than pursued. The cooking is the point – personal, special, as the friend said. Nothing on the plate is accidental.

The Atmosphere

The dining room is calm and welcoming, with air conditioning for comfort and vegetarian options available. It opens Wednesday through Saturday from 18:00, closing on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, and for the months of July and August, as well as Christmas. The Schlegels greet their guests personally, and the evening unfolds at a deliberate, unhurried pace. It is a place where the setting and the food speak the same quiet language – one of timelessness and care.

Concept Gourmet cuisine at the Gewandhaus featuring two tasting menus, with courses also available as vegetarian options and à la carte. Culinary Style Detlef Schlegel stands for continuity: classic culinary techniques, creative recipes, and modern execution using high-quality ingredients from both local and distant regions. He often conceals carp from Lusatia as a delightful palate teaser in the amuse-bouche. Appetite builds with each course, such as truffles from the Périgord served with blanched spinach and a runny egg yolk, or delicate pink slices of venison enhanced by a subtle touch of mustard and fresh grapes for added depth and juiciness, before exquisite desserts and pralines bring the sweet finale to a close. Wine The carefully curated wine list highlights not only fine wines from the Saale-Unstrut, Elbe, and Mosel regions, but also exceptional Rieslings from prestigious vineyard sites. Ambiance The bright dining room, glazed floor-to-ceiling on three sides, feels modern, stylish, and airy, accented by vibrant, colorful original artworks. Petra Schlegel confidently leads her service team with the grace of a charming and warm hostess. Conclusion This restaurant rightfully holds its reputation as a culinary beacon in Saxony.
