The story
In the historic centre of Marktbreit, between the Main river and rolling vineyards, Ramona and Markus Söder run their restaurant Alter Esel. The building dates from the 1700s and was carefully renovated in 1999. The ground-floor dining room is the warm heart of the house, while the upper room seats up to 30 guests for private celebrations. Surrounded by landmarks like the Malerwinkelhaus and the old crane, the location feels both timeless and inviting.
There is no à la carte menu. Instead, Markus decides each day what the markets and local producers offer. Guests choose only the number of courses – four, five, or six – and the kitchen does the rest. The approach is seasonal and regional, with occasional global touches. A recent menu featured tartare of Alblinsen with quinoa taboulé, halibut with gremolata crust, and a warm chocolate cake with Cedri lemon compote. Vegetarian versions are always available. The team is proud to be Slow Food members, sourcing from partners such as Naturlandhof Lehner for lamb and poultry, Auenland Beef, and local vegetable growers.
Ramona, your hostess, guides you through a wine list that highlights Franconian growers alongside selected European bottles. The house aperitif, Eselstrunk, combines winzersecco with a changing homemade syrup. For beer lovers, there are craft options from Pax Bräu in the Rhön region. The restaurant’s philosophy is clear: quality ingredients, honest preparation, and a relaxed atmosphere.
In 2026, Alter Esel earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for good quality, good value cooking. It is a fitting nod to the care that goes into every plate and glass. Whether you come for a Sunday lunch or an evening dinner, you will find a place that values substance over show – and makes you feel at home.
