The story
Mural sits inside the MUCA Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art in Munich’s old town, occupying the former transformer station of the city’s utility company. The space is a fitting backdrop for a kitchen that treats ingredients as raw material for something quietly transformative.
Chef Bastian Falkenroth leads the kitchen with a clear principle: let the product speak. His Modern Cuisine is built on seasonally selected, sustainably grown ingredients from the region. “I cook with what touches me, with what grows here, what is close, what makes sense,” he says. The result is a style that is refined yet uncluttered – no noise, no unnecessary show, just balance between depth and lightness.
The restaurant offers a lunch menu, an evening tasting menu (currently 119 € for seven courses), and a separate Vinothek for more casual drop-in visits. The March 2026 menu includes dishes like a winter salad with ricotta, heirloom carrot, and walnut; flower sprout in dashi; and pheasant “collé à la farce” with red cabbage and spelt. A vegetarian menu is also available.
Mural’s wine program is one of the city’s most progressive. Sommelier Maxime Geay curates over 1,100 labels, with a strong focus on Burgundy and the Jura, all from small artisan producers. The list has been called “one of the largest and stylistically most progressive in the city” by Der Feinschmecker. Naturally, the emphasis is on handcrafted, low-intervention wines – perfectly aligned with the “drink natural” creed.
The restaurant earned a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026, recognition that matches the precision and care evident in both the kitchen and the cellar. Whether you come for a considered lunch, a multi-course dinner, or a glass of something rare in the Vinothek, Mural delivers a sense of place and purpose.
