The story

Pageou Munich: Mediterranean Flavors by Chef Ali Güngörmüş | Michelin Recommended

The best out of the simple.

At Pageou in Munich's Fünf Höfe, Chef Ali Güngörmüş follows a single guiding principle: make the best out of simple, good products. His cooking is open, calm, and welcoming—just like the restaurant itself. "I want my guests to understand the dishes," he says, and hopes they leave with a taste for more: for experiences that delight a refined palate, for culinary adventures.

The name Pageou is deeply personal. It was the village in eastern Anatolia where Güngörmüş spent his first ten years—six mud huts surrounded by goats, donkeys, and chickens, with no running water and oil lamps instead of electricity. The landscape was picturesque, the summers blazing and winters harsh. But the lamb dishes his mother made, and the bread his grandmother baked on the ground, stayed with him. Now, a breath of that old village's soul infuses this new restaurant, making it a true statement.

Mediterranean soul, Anatolian roots

Güngörmüş's philosophy is rooted in the translation of his Turkish family name: "Look into the sun, look into the day." That energy is palpable when you see and taste how he brings out the character of his core ingredients. The results sometimes feel Mediterranean, sometimes oriental with a hint of a thousand and one nights. Always, there is a successful marriage of selected aromas that subtly underline a product's uniqueness. Every creation that arrives at the table in Pageou follows this creed.

The kitchen is open Tuesday through Saturday from 18:00 to 22:00, with counter dining and outdoor seating available. The space is designed to be understood, just like the food—no pretense, just excellent Mediterranean cooking that tells a story of place and memory.

Culinary Style Despite his television commitments, Ali Güngörmüş continues to shape the culinary style, skillfully balancing French-inspired technique with a rich variety of Oriental spices. The best introduction to his world of flavors is the large meze platter when the table is fully set out – creamy hummus with smoked paprika and pomegranate, feta börek with zucchini and date dip, octopus with pointed cabbage and currants. A popular highlight is the oven-roasted crispy Pageou duck for two, carved at the table and served with ginger cranberries, apple red cabbage, and dumplings. Wine Well-curated wine list featuring many well-known names (around 300 selections). Atmosphere Spacious, bright, with high ceilings – a cosmopolitan restaurant with skillfully placed lighting effects and a great ambiance. Beautiful terrace; friendly service.
