The story
Ristorante Calabria brings decades of Italian cooking to a bright setting just outside Pforzheim. Vincenzo and Pina Gagliardi assumed control of their parents’ original establishment in 1998, safeguarding recipes developed since 1978. The historic brick building in Bretten once drew crowds with its characterful architecture. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded the venue one and a half ladles for maintaining consistent standards across every course.
Every dish in this Italian kitchen arrives from a workspace where sauces simmer daily and dough is stretched by hand. A traditional spread of N’Duja introduces guests to the region’s signature blend of cured meat and fiery peppers. The rotating menu highlights carbonara prepared without cream, penne arrabbiata with roasted peppers, and tagliatelle tossed with wild mushrooms. Classic proteins like osso buco anchor the main plates alongside fresh seafood options.
Everything beyond the front door revolves around the adjacent fairways, leaving the sun-drenched dining room dedicated to favorite dishes from southern Italy. Guests frequently choose the wide outdoor terrace during warmer months, where stone ovens keep pizzas bubbling near the grassy edges. Sweet finishes range from lightly whipped zabaione to ripe strawberries paired with mascarpone. Savory palettes rest on aged pecorino or house-smoked ricotta served alongside crusty bread.
