The story
The restaurant Gastraum is part of the Hotel Villa Hügel, a white Jugendstil villa built in 1914 for a wine merchant family. The dining room is light-flooded, with high ceilings and large windows that frame the Roman old town. In summer, the panoramic terrace offers a view over the Kaiserthermen and the Moselle vineyards.
The kitchen team, described as young and creative, prepares what they call a “light and contemporary” cuisine. Their approach is grounded in freshness and regionality: seasonal products from the Hochwald and Eifel regions dominate, combined with international recipes. The result is modern cuisine that feels both grounded and inventive. The menu changes daily with a four-course option, alongside an à la carte selection that includes dishes such as a carrot-orange soup with ginger and caramelised sunflower seeds, or a Charolais beef carpaccio with Parmesan and pine nuts.
Gastraum’s commitment to quality has earned it a Michelin Recommended award, a recognition that aligns with the restaurant’s own understated ambition: the team does not seek to compete with the city’s starred houses, but rather to offer an honest, well-crafted meal in a welcoming setting. The bar stays open until 1 am, and the atmosphere is relaxed – whether you are a hotel guest or a local looking for a refined evening out.
From the langschläfer breakfast to the afternoon sweets and the evening à la carte, Gastraum serves modern cuisine that respects the seasons. The wine list highlights Mosel-Saar-Ruwer varieties alongside international selections. With its blend of historic architecture, panoramic views, and a kitchen that lets the ingredients speak, Gastraum is a genuine Trier insider tip.
