Garrett opened Campagne in 2008 in his home city of Kilkenny, returning after years cooking in London and Dublin. The restaurant sits under the old railway arches near John’s Street – a setting that feels both grounded and quietly distinctive. The guiding philosophy is simple: “French inspired food and wine.” The kitchen looks to regional France for its inspiration, while the menu itself is led by the seasons and the produce they bring.

The Dining Room

The atmosphere is refined but unpretentious. The arched space lends a sense of intimacy, and the service is attentive without being intrusive. It is the kind of place where the details matter – the weighting of the cutlery, the clarity of the consommé – but where the focus always returns to the plate.

The Menu

The dinner menu changes with the market, but the style is consistent. A sample early bird or Sunday lunch menu might start with smoked mackerel pate with golden beetroot, capers, and mustard seed dressing, or an oxtail croquette with lentils and green peppercorn salsa verde. Main courses such as braised short rib of beef with celeriac, spinach, and pancetta sit alongside roast hake with braised baby gem, Morteau sausage, and wild garlic butter. Even the vegetarian option – a gratinated globe artichoke with chickpeas, spinach, and wild mushrooms – receives the same careful composition.

Desserts follow the same logic: chocolate mousse with passion fruit curd, a savarin with marinated strawberries and lemon curd chantilly, or a lime parfait with honey ice cream.

Recognition and Rhythm

Campagne earned its Michelin star in September 2013, a distinction it has held since. The accolade is mentioned on the restaurant’s own about page as part of a broader list of national and international recognition, but it never feels like the point. The point is the cooking: precise, seasonal, French in spirit but very much of Kilkenny. The restaurant also serves an early bird menu on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and a Sunday lunch, making the experience accessible beyond the traditional dinner service.
