The story

Farmgate Lismore: Michelin-Recommended Dining in Lismore, Ireland

From Midleton to Lismore

Farmgate’s story began in 1983, when Máróg O’Brien opened a shop in Midleton, County Cork, selling fruit, vegetables, and homemade bakes. Over four decades, it grew into a much-loved food store, bakery, and restaurant. Then, in October 2023, catastrophic flooding destroyed everything. Without flood insurance, the original Farmgate was gone.

Rather than give up, Máróg’s daughter, Sally O’Brien, looked to a property she had bought years earlier on Main Street in Lismore—an old bar run by the Casey sisters. She sensitively preserved its wonderful character, fitting out the ground floor and opening onto a beautiful, old world garden at the rear. Farmgate Lismore opened its doors, and the Michelin guide soon took notice, recommending it for its quality.

The Team Behind the Food

Sally, who worked at the original Farmgate for 20 years, runs the restaurant with Head Chef David Doran. Doran spent 30 years in the Midleton kitchen and knows the Farmgate philosophy by heart: fresh, local, seasonal ingredients handled with the minimum of fuss. The interior is warm and welcoming, service is unpretentious, and the atmosphere is one of relaxed, daily pleasure.

What’s on the Plate

The menus change with the seasons but always champion Irish producers. Meat comes from McGrath’s Butchers in Lismore, fish from Atlantis Seafood in Wexford, vegetables from the Country Store in Dungarvan, and bread from Dún Bakery. Starters might include a rich seafood chowder with cod, salmon, and smoked haddock, or chicken liver pâté with Cumberland sauce. Mains range from a traditional roast free-range chicken with thyme and onion stuffing to slow-cooked braised lamb shank and pan-seared sirloin steak. Vegetarians are well served with a roast butternut squash, rosemary, and Parmesan risotto. Desserts and sides—like creamy spring onion champ—are equally straightforward and satisfying.

Farmgate Lismore serves dinner Thursday through Saturday, lunch Fridays and Saturdays, and a Sunday menu from 1pm. Reservations are by email only. It is a testament to resilience, family, and the simple power of good cooking.
