The story
Osteria L'Orciaia occupies the old orciaia (oil mill) of a 16th‑century palace in Montebenichi, a hilltop hamlet in the province of Arezzo, within the comune of Ambra. The dining room looks out over a breathtaking panorama of the Tuscan countryside. In good weather, a few tables are set outside on a comfortable dehor.
The restaurant opened in May 2000 and is run with love and passion by Gino Biagi, together with his son Simone and daughter‑in‑law Ewa. The atmosphere is welcoming – the sort of place where guests feel like family.
The kitchen stays true to the flavours of Tuscan cuisine. Dishes are simple but deeply satisfying, made following traditional recipes with inevitably long cooking times. Every ingredient is seasonal and local – the olive oil, for instance, comes from the ancient olive trees that surround the osteria. The wine list showcases well‑chosen local bottles.
Antipasti range from classic bruschetta paired with excellent salumi and cheeses to fagioli del purgatorio al fiasco (beans slow‑cooked in a flask). Among the piatti unici, ribollita and a custom panzanella with secret ingredients stand out. Fresh pasta is made in‑house: pici and tagliatelle dressed with various sauces and ragù. Secondi highlight the cinta senese, a traditional Tuscan breed of pig, prepared as sausages and fillets, alongside rich stracotti. Desserts are all homemade, including tiramisù with ricotta and seasonal crostate served with vin santo.
In 2026, Osteria L'Orciaia earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, an acknowledgment of its honest, high‑quality cooking and the warm hospitality of the Biagi family. For anyone seeking genuine Tuscan flavours in a setting that feels both ancient and alive, this osteria in Montebenichi delivers exactly that.
