The story
In the heart of Ancona’s fisherman’s quarter, under the porticoes in front of the fish market, Sot’Ajarchi has been a fixture since 1991. It began as a passion project for Fabio and Paola, who chose a small space in the city’s most authentic seafood neighborhood. Their daughter Francesca joined the kitchen team in 2012, and the restaurant was expanded and modernized in 2019, creating a more welcoming environment while keeping its connection to the market.
The cooking philosophy is straightforward: simple, traditional Italian seafood, lightened by a contemporary touch. Everything on the menu is made to order, using fish from the Adriatic Sea that arrives daily. The restaurant’s respect for the raw ingredient is absolute, and its commitment to sustainability is demonstrated by closing entirely during the local fishing moratorium—a practice they have maintained from the very beginning.
This honest, ingredient-driven approach has earned Sot’Ajarchi a Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award that recognizes good quality, good value cooking. The restaurant has also received the Chiocciola from Slow Food and two Gamberi from Gambero Rosso. The menu changes with the seasons and market availability, offering a true taste of what the sea in front of Ancona provides.
