The story
In the small town of Sarre, just outside Aosta, Trattoria di Campagna is redefining what “typical Valle d’Aosta cooking” can be. This family-run restaurant takes the region’s hearty classics—polenta, carbonada, fonduta—and gives them a confident, contemporary spin. The result is a modern Italian cuisine that feels both deeply rooted and refreshingly new.
The kitchen works almost entirely with zero-kilometre ingredients, so local that, as the team puts it, you can hear the pantry speaking in patois. The menu changes with the seasons, never repeating itself twice, and occasionally makes room for a French-inspired recipe or a national curiosity. Guests have praised dishes like the potato flan with parmesan cream, rabbit cooked in Chardonnay with olives and rustic polenta, and a chocolate mousse that one diner called “spectacular.”
The restaurant’s wine programme is every bit as ambitious as its food. What began as a simple storage space has grown into a cellar of more than five hundred labels, curated by Beatrice Cortese, one of Valle d’Aosta’s most noted sommeliers. Her work earned the restaurant the “Best Wine List” award from Slow Food’s Osterie d’Italia 2024, as well as the “Best Wine List – Osteria/Trattoria” prize at the Milano Wine Week 2022. The list is described as “ample, varied and coherent,” with deep attention to local producers and thoughtful selections from across Italy.
This recognition, along with a Michelin Recommended status for 2026, places Trattoria di Campagna firmly on the map for anyone seeking serious food and wine in the Alps.
The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with a family warmth that extends from the dining room to the cellar. The trattoria also hosts tastings, aperitifs, and even live music events in the cantina. Outdoor seating, a private room, and catering are available, making it a versatile spot for everything from a quiet lunch to a private party.
Trattoria di Campagna is a place where tradition isn’t preserved under glass—it’s tasted, shared, and quietly improved.
