The story

Osteria Manzoni: Michelin-Recommended Italian Dining in Barzago, Italy

The Setting

Osteria Manzoni occupies a 19th-century building in Barzago, originally a bakery workshop run by the “Franco Prestinerèn Rovagnati” family. Today, the space has been restored with modern architecture and design to preserve its history and beauty. Inside, rock walls and artworks create an elegant, refined atmosphere—what the team calls a “ristorante elegante di charme.” The restaurant seats 36–40 guests across two ground-floor rooms and a heated cellar, offering a sense of quiet comfort and privacy.

The People

Chef Francesco Cheloni, a Florentine, and his partner Giovanna Bettega, a Lecco native, met while working alongside Chef Giancarlo Morelli. In July 2020, they combined their skills—his in the kitchen, hers in events and decor—to launch Osteria Manzoni. Their shared passion drives a young, energetic team that includes Alessandro, Alessandra, Giorgia, and others. The restaurant’s warm hospitality is built on the belief that “buon cibo, sale eleganti, giovani sorrisi” form an unbreakable bond of good hosting.

The Cuisine

The menu stays true to “sapori primordiali e riconoscibili” (primordial, recognizable flavors) with a strong influence from Brianza and Lombardy, always connected to Tuscany through the chef’s roots. Dishes are simple, technically precise, and full of energy. The restaurant’s zero-waste philosophy—“food powder is our super power”—means every edible part of an ingredient is used, from peels to cores to offal. A sample menu from a festive event includes classics like mondeghino (a three-meat meatball with mortadella), risotto mantecato with butter, sage, and culatello from Brianza, and a tiramisù with coffee-soaked sponge, mascarpone mousse, and coffee gelato.

The Philosophy

Osteria Manzoni has earned a place in the Michelin Guide Italy as a Recommended restaurant for 2026, along with consistent recognition from Gambero Rosso and Il Golosario. The team’s approach is rooted in the local terroir: they source ingredients from the Brianza region and beyond, respecting the land and those who work it. The result is a dining experience that feels both rooted in tradition and freshly modern—a place where Italian cuisine is celebrated with energy, creativity, and genuine hospitality.
