The story
In the sunny village of Chienes, at the foot of the Plan de Corones in the Dolomites, the Hotel & Locanda Sudtirolese Der Gassenwirt has been welcoming guests since 1602. Run by Petra, Andreas and their children Philipp, Johanna and Felix, this family inn combines genuine hospitality with a deep respect for local food traditions.
The restaurant’s country cooking and home cooking are at the heart of the experience. The kitchen prioritises quality, freshness and regionality – ingredients come from their own grain mill, herb garden and pine oil distillery. This commitment to the land and to simple, honest flavours earned Gassenwirt a Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award that recognises good quality, good value cooking. It’s a fitting tribute to a kitchen that lets the South Tyrolean landscape speak through its dishes.
Guests are invited to explore the region’s natural bounty – hiking trails, mountain bike routes, and in winter, skiing on the Kronplatz or Gitschberg. After a day outdoors, the bar offers a refreshing aperitif, and the wellness area with indoor pool and saunas provides a restorative pause. But the real draw remains the table: a place where tradition, family and the taste of the Alps come together.
From the herb garden to the plate, Gassenwirt is a living example of how regional, home-style cooking can be both comforting and worthy of international recognition.
