The story
In the quiet hamlet of Issengo, near Brunico in South Tyrol's Val Pusteria, the Baumgartner Rieder family runs a small, personal boutique hotel that also houses a restaurant worth seeking out on its own. The tone is warm and unhurried, with an emphasis on genuine hospitality. Guests who are not staying overnight are welcome to dine in the old "Stube" or, in fine weather, in the garden – where the setting shifts with the season.
The kitchen, recognized by Michelin as a Recommended restaurant since 2014, turns out seasonal, creative compositions that have also earned nods from Gault&Millau, Gambero Rosso's Ristoranti d'Italia, the Schlemmer Atlas (three wooden spoons), and the Varta Guide. The team describes their work as "refined and imaginative dishes" marked by attention to detail and exceptional taste. There are no menus to quote here – the offering changes with what the region provides.
Wine is a serious pleasure. Sommelier Michael curates a rare selection with a particular focus on South Tyrolean wines, especially those from small-scale producers working with traditional, natural methods. He and Melanie are especially fond of naturally fermented wines, which they believe best express authenticity and complexity. A wine tasting at Tanzer becomes a journey through the region's character, and guests can purchase their favourite bottles to take home.
The restaurant is part of a larger hotel experience, but the dining room stands firmly on its own – a place where the cooking is informed by the landscape and the service feels personal rather than rehearsed. For anyone exploring the Dolomites or the Kronplatz area, Tanzer offers a genuine taste of what South Tyrolean gourmet hospitality can be.
