The story
In the small town of Follina, at the foot of the Treviso Prealps, Osteria dai Mazzeri is a place where tradition runs deep. The name comes from the Mazzero family—brothers Vito and Mauro, who opened the osteria in 2006. Their roots in hospitality, however, stretch back to the early 1970s, when each discovered his own calling: Vito in the kitchen, Mauro in wine and welcoming guests.
The restaurant’s philosophy is simple: immerse yourself in the tradition of Venetian cuisine. Vito works directly with small local producers who bring him the fruits of their gardens and livestock daily. The menu changes with the seasons, drawing inspiration from the hills and fields around Follina—mushrooms and chestnuts from the woods, Lamon beans, Sant’Erasmo artichokes, Treviso radicchio, Cimadolmo asparagus, and wild herbs.
The Gran Misto dell’Osteria, a selection of seasonal antipasti, is a perfect introduction to the kitchen’s philosophy. Among the first courses, house-made pasta shines: ravioli with duck and fresh mushrooms, tortelli di zucca with Morlacco cheese fondue, seasonal risottos, and the beloved “pasta e fasoi.” Second courses focus on the Venetian tradition of white meats, such as “Pit in tecia” (chicken braised in Prosecco or red wine, served with polenta and potatoes) and oven-roasted duck from Motta with “peverada” sauce. Classic regional dishes like fegato alla veneziana, trippa alla veneta, and baccalà alla vicentina also appear. The exception to the Venetian rule is grilled Fassona and Chianina beef, cooked over the hearth’s embers.
A special mention goes to the spiedo—a mixed spit of chicken, veal, and pork, cooked slowly for over four hours until tender and succulent. Typically available on weekends in autumn and winter, it’s a dish that embodies the area’s culinary heritage.
The osteria offers a warm, welcoming setting with outdoor seating in a garden, perfect for the long lunches and dinners that celebrate the region’s wines—Mauro’s domain. The wine list is deep and interesting, naturally reflecting the Prosecco hills that surround Follina.
This dedication to authentic, ingredient-driven Venetian cuisine has earned the restaurant a Michelin recommendation, a nod to its consistency and respect for local traditions. Osteria dai Mazzeri is a genuine osteria in the best sense: a place where the food tells the story of the land, the seasons, and the family behind it.
