The story
Butterfly, an Italian kitchen in Lucca, opened in December 1997 when Fabrizio and Mariella Girasoli established a family-run space dedicated to seasonal cooking. Fabrizio trained independently and channels his interest in music and the local landscape into what he describes as a kitchen of memory. His son Andrea now shares the pass, preserving regional recipes while applying modern techniques to fresh ingredients. That hands-on approach secured a Michelin star in 2008 and guides the daily menu.
The menu highlights ancient Tuscan flavors reimagined through unexpected textures and careful plating. Guests can explore a curated tasting path or request a fully vegetarian progression built around the same seasonal foundation. Every plate relies on locally sourced produce selected for ripeness rather than novelty. The kitchen focuses primarily on delivering consistent, terroir-driven Italian cooking to seated diners.
The main hall functions as a winter garden that opens directly onto a shaded park suitable for warm-weather meals. An updated interior maintains a refined atmosphere while keeping the layout intimate enough for conversation. Semi-formal attire is expected, and the staff welcomes well-behaved dogs kept close to their owners. Recent recognition from the We’re Smart Green Guide reflects a commitment to sustainable practices without compromising a traditional Italian dining environment.
