The story

Taverna 58: Bib Gourmand Italian Restaurant in Pescara Since 1980

Taverna 58: Abruzzese Tradition in the Heart of Pescara

Since 1980, Taverna 58 has been a fixture in Pescara’s old town, on Corso Manthoné. The restaurant describes itself as one of the city’s most interesting places, located on the street where both Gabriele D’Annunzio and Ennio Flaiano were born. This literary connection runs deep—Flaiano’s quotes appear throughout the space, and D’Annunzio’s legacy is felt in one of the restaurant’s signature dishes.

The kitchen focuses on Abruzzese tradition. The menu is built around “piatti storici senza tempo”—timeless historical dishes that have been on the carte since the 1980s and remain unshakeable. Among them is the Fellata Abruzzese, a shareable platter of local cured meats and cheeses: pecorino marcetto from Castel del Monte, prosciutto di Torano, salame aquilano, coppa vastese, and ventricina teramana. Another standout is the Frittatina Sublime, described as “La Sainte Omelette Dannunziana,” with cooked and raw vegetables and a slice of lightly seared goat cheese. There is also a dish of snails from Fratta di Città Sant’Angelo, roasted with fresh herbs from the Abbey of Santa Maria da Propezzano.

The wine cellar is stocked with bottles from the Abruzzo region, chosen to accompany the food. The staff is seasoned: two members have been with the restaurant since the early days of founder Giovanni Marrone, and continue under current management with Gabriele Di Leandro.

Taverna 58 holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award that recognises good quality, good value cooking. It is a fitting acknowledgment for a restaurant that has spent more than four decades refining its version of Italian cuisine without chasing trends. The atmosphere is rooted in the old city, with a room now called the “Saletta Mastro Vittorio” that once housed a carpentry workshop—a reminder of the last artisans of Corso Manthoné.
