The story
In the quiet countryside near Portomaggiore, La Chiocciola operates as both a locanda and a trattoria, offering a classic cuisine that is deeply rooted in the Ferrara territory. The restaurant has been a fixture for twenty years, known to regulars as the former Trattoria da Ido. Its story is one of deliberate reinvention: the team moved from their old location in Marrara to a restored granary building, a structure that once served the agricultural world for grain collection. They renovated it carefully, preserving its original character and the strength of its rural past.
The kitchen is led by chef Adalberto Migliari, known as "Athos," who focuses on seasonal ingredients and traditional dishes. The menu features both meat and fish, with specialties that include snails and frogs. The restaurant’s own words describe their approach as a fusion of past and present, aiming to deliver more than just a meal—an experience of their story. The wine list is curated by sommelier Ido, who is on hand to guide pairings.
The atmosphere is described as relaxed and welcoming, a space where the aesthetics of a refined restaurant meet the tranquility of the countryside. This balance has earned the restaurant a Michelin recommendation, a recognition that speaks to the quality of its contemporary take on regional classic cuisine. La Chiocciola is closed Sunday evening, all day Monday, and Tuesday evening.
