The story
In the town of Haibara-akanedai, surrounded by the gentle landscapes of Nara, Ike Edoyakiunagi Asahitei has built a reputation on a single, focused pursuit: the finest grilled eel. The restaurant’s commitment is evident from the first ingredient. They use only the highest quality farmed live eels from Aichi and Shizuoka prefectures, selected for their size and the depth of flavor their thick fillets provide.
The preparation is a meticulous craft. Each eel is split from the back, a traditional Kanto-style technique, then grilled white before being steamed to a tender perfection. Finally, it is carefully charred over the flame with Asahitei’s signature sauce, developing a rich, aromatic glaze that complements the natural richness of the fish. The result is unagi that is both luxuriously soft and deeply savory.
This dedication has not gone unnoticed. Asahitei has been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand, a recognition reserved for restaurants that deliver exceptional quality at a reasonable price. It is a fitting honor for a place that lets the ingredient speak for itself.
The menu is straightforward and focused, offering classic preparations like unaju (grilled eel over rice in a lacquered box) and hitsumabushi (chopped eel over rice, enjoyed multiple ways). The atmosphere is welcoming and practical, with a spacious 62-seat interior that includes private partitioned areas for groups. It is a place where the craft of unagi is the center of attention, served without pretense in the Japanese countryside.
