The story
Benoit Kyoto is exactly what it promises: a genuine Parisian bistro, transplanted to the slopes of Kiyomizu. Set within The Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu, the restaurant channels the spirit and taste of a classic French bistro – the kind where the food is hearty, the wine flows freely, and the atmosphere is convivial. The dining room overlooks the temple-dotted hills of Higashiyama, a backdrop that quietly reminds you that you are in Kyoto while the kitchen speaks fluent French.
The kitchen draws from the repertoire of French bistro classics, executed with precision. Guests choose from a prix-fixe formula or order à la carte. Among the signatures: squid and fennel tossed with couscous and bulgur in a rich squid-ink broth, beef-tail ravioli, pâté en croûte, and a cassoulet Benoit-style that brings the south-west of France to Kyoto. Desserts are equally faithful – profiteroles filled with vanilla ice cream and diplomat cream, drenched in Alain Ducasse chocolate sauce, alongside the perennial savarin and mille-feuille.
Benoit Kyoto has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, a nod to its consistent execution and the integrity of its French cuisine. For those who book one of the chef’s omakase-style courses, the restaurant offers a rare perk: a same-day reservation at the hotel’s rooftop bar, K36. There, overlooking the city’s rooftops and the Gozan no Okuribi fire festival hills, you can enjoy a specially curated three-glass wine pairing selected by the sommelier.
Afternoons are given over to a French-style afternoon tea. The savarin with Armagnac and Chantilly takes centre stage, joined by passion fruit and coconut pound cake, mango shortcake, tonka bean blanc-manger, and Basque cheesecake. Savoury bites – croque-monsieur and foie gras confit – balance the sweets. It is a leisurely affair, served from 1:30 pm, and best enjoyed while watching the light shift over the temple rooftops.
Benoit Kyoto is a place where the traditions of a Parisian bistro meet the quiet elegance of Kyoto – no gimmicks, just good food, careful wine, and a setting that makes you want to linger.
