The story

Choshoku Kishin | Bib Gourmand Japanese Breakfast in Kyoto

Choshoku Kishin

In the heart of Kyoto’s Gion district, Choshoku Kishin offers a morning meal that is both a culinary experience and a meditation on Japanese food culture. The name “Kishin” comes from Zen, meaning “joyful mind.” The restaurant’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that preparing and eating a meal are acts of training, and therefore precious and joyful. This spirit is reflected in every detail of the Japanese breakfast served here.

The menu draws inspiration from a mother’s homemade cooking, using fresh, local ingredients sourced around Kyoto. The result is a seasonal, multi-course breakfast that changes with the calendar. The current Summer 2025 menu, for example, highlights the best produce of the season. This commitment to quality and value has earned Choshoku Kishin a Michelin Bib Gourmand for eight consecutive years, a recognition noted in the Michelin Guide Kyoto & Osaka 2026.

The restaurant is located on the first floor of the Rinn Hotel Gion Hana touro, a short walk from the Gion-Shijo Station. The space is designed for a focused, unhurried meal, with counter dining that allows guests to watch the preparation. Reservations are required for the Gion location, which serves breakfast in timed slots from 7:30 AM to 1:50 PM. The restaurant is closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Beyond the daily breakfast service, Choshoku Kishin also hosts occasional workshops, such as a class on cooking rice in a clay pot (donabe) and making Kyoto-style miso soup with pork. The restaurant is part of the broader Kishin Project, which includes a café, Kissa Kishin, in the Kiyomizu area, and a pop-up program that invites guest chefs to use the professional-grade kitchen. For those who want to take the experience home, the restaurant’s soups are available for shipping within Japan through their online store.
