The story

Etto Kyoto – Intimate Italian Dining in a Quiet Residential Corner of Kyoto

A Quiet Italian Retreat Near the Imperial Palace

Tucked away at the end of a stone-paved alley in a tranquil residential district west of Kyoto’s Imperial Palace, Etto is a small, counter-only restaurant that serves Italian cuisine with a distinctly Japanese sense of season and detail. The approach—down a narrow lane off Daikokuyacho—sets the tone before you even step inside.

The dining room is intimate and deliberately limited in capacity. Guests sit at a full-flat counter, watching the chefs work in a space designed for live, unhurried preparation. The atmosphere is calm and focused, suited for a quiet evening with someone close.

The Omakase Course

Etto offers a single omakase course that changes with the seasons. The menu, updated as of September 2024, comprises nine courses priced at ¥10,000 (excluding tax and service charge). The philosophy is straightforward: respect the ingredient. Seasonal Japanese produce is handled with care and presented through an Italian lens, with an emphasis on flavour rather than flourish.

The cooking is not about novelty for its own sake. Instead, it follows the rhythm of Japan’s shifting seasons, letting the ingredients speak. The result is a meal that feels both grounded and refined.

Wine and Drink Pairing

With a cellar of roughly 400 bottles, the sommelier proposes wine pairings tailored to each course. Glasses start at ¥1,000, bottles from ¥6,000. For those who prefer alternatives, Kyoto craft beer, sake, and non-alcoholic options such as bottled craft tea are also available. The pairing is handled with the same quiet attention as the food—suggested, not imposed.

A Michelin Recommended Address

Etto’s consistent, thoughtful approach earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026. The recognition aligns with what regulars already know: this is a place that values precision over hype, and substance over style. In a city full of exceptional dining, Etto holds its own by doing one thing well—serving honest, seasonal Italian in a setting that lets the food and the company take centre stage.
