The story
Just a five-minute walk from Keihan’s Gion-Shijo Station, Gombei (officially Gion-Gonbe) has been a fixture in Kyoto’s geisha district, serving straightforward Japanese comfort food: soba, udon, and donburi. The restaurant is a specialist in these three categories, and its reputation for honest cooking earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2026 – an award that recognises good quality at a good value.
The menu is concise and centred on classic preparations. The Tori Namba (1,400 yen) features morning-harvested local chicken simmered with sharp, fragrant Kujo negi (green onions) – a combination that has become one of the shop’s most popular noodle dishes. For those who prefer udon, the Kamaage Udon (1,300 yen) is served as a dipping noodle; in the days when Gombei stayed open late, this was the go-to post-drink meal in Gion, and it remains a signature. The Tempura Soba (2,600 yen) offers a warm soba or udon topped with prawn tempura, fried slightly firm so the batter softens into the broth – a different texture from the cold tempura-zaru style. All prices are subject to change without notice, as the restaurant notes.
The atmosphere is that of a neighbourhood soba-ya: unfussy, welcoming, and rooted in its location. The restaurant operates a split schedule on weekdays (11:30–15:00, last order 14:40, and 17:00–20:00, last order 19:40) and continuous hours on weekends and holidays (11:30–20:00). It is closed on Thursdays. Contact is by telephone only.
For a taste of Kyoto’s soba tradition – recognised by Michelin for its reliable quality – Gombei delivers the real thing in the heart of Gion.
