The story

HANA-Kitcho – Michelin-Starred Japanese Kaiseki in Kyoto's Gion District

HANA-Kitcho

In the heart of Kyoto's Gion district, where geiko and maiko move between ochaya and kabuki-za, HANA-Kitcho has quietly held its ground since 1991. The restaurant was born alongside the reconstruction of Minami-za, the historic kabuki theatre, and originally served meals and bento between acts to theatre-goers, as well as catering to nearby tea houses and weddings at Yasaka Shrine. It was, from the start, a restaurant rooted in the life of the neighbourhood.

In 2010, the restaurant was reborn as HANA-Kitcho, with a refreshed interior that brings modern decorative works by celebrated artists into each floor. The name itself – HANA, meaning flower – is a nod to its location at the centre of the flower-town (hanamachi) districts of Gion, Ponto-cho, and Miyagawa-cho. The restaurant continues the legacy of Kyoto Kitcho, one of Japan's most revered ryotei, while offering something distinct: it is the only Kyoto Kitcho outpost with a counter, where guests can enjoy a single dish with a favourite drink, as well as full kaiseki courses.

The Michelin inspectors have recognised the quality of this cooking, awarding HANA-Kitcho one star. The restaurant's Japanese cuisine is built on the seasonal precision and hospitality that founder Teiichi Yuki championed, but with a playful, accessible spirit. Private rooms on each floor are designed for important gatherings, while the second-floor tatami room can host up to 28 guests and holds annual events centred on seasonal ingredients, sake, and tea.

HANA-Kitcho is a place where the formality of kaiseki meets the warmth of a neighbourhood restaurant. The counter, in particular, invites a more spontaneous kind of dining – a sake and a single seasonal dish – without sacrificing the rigour of the kitchen. It is Japanese fine dining made intimate, and a rare chance to experience Kyoto Kitcho's standards in a setting that feels both modern and deeply local.
