The story
Just a three-minute walk from Nijojo-mae Station, Ichihana offers a refined escape from the city's busier streets. The restaurant's bright, wood-accented interior provides a calm, high-quality setting for a meal centered around its signature dish: kamameshi. Served in individual pots, the rice is carefully cooked to order, using Koshikihari rice from Itoigawa and seasonal ingredients. The menu features a rotating selection of kamameshi, including classic options like gomoku (five-ingredient), sansai (mountain vegetables), and seasonal specialties such as octopus with young ginger in summer or scallop with peas in spring.
The kitchen's commitment to Japanese cuisine is evident in every course. The lunch osakana gozen is a seven-course affair that begins with small appetizers, sashimi, and tempura before the guest selects their preferred kamameshi, followed by pickles, red miso soup, and dessert. Dinner offerings are equally thoughtful, with a la carte dishes like duck roast, Japanese-style roast beef, and Wagyu steak complementing the rice pots. The restaurant's dedication to quality and value has been recognized with a Michelin Bib Gourmand award, a testament to its ability to deliver an exceptional meal without pretense.
With only seven counter seats, Ichihana is an intimate space where guests can watch the chefs at work. The counter is the heart of the restaurant, offering a direct connection to the cooking process and the subtle aromas of the kamameshi as they are prepared. This close setting, combined with the warm service, makes for a personal and memorable evening. Whether for a solo dinner or a quiet meal with company, Ichihana provides a genuine taste of Kyoto's dedication to seasonal, beautifully prepared food.
