Kanamean Nishitomiya

In the heart of Kyoto, on a historic street called Tominokouji, Kanamean Nishitomiya has been quietly welcoming guests since 1873. The name "Kaname" carries two meanings: the rivet of a fan and the key point—a reference to the area’s fan-making heritage and the hope that guests will find the inn a key place in their experience of Kyoto.

This is a sukiya-style ryokan, a small luxury hotel with just eight rooms, each designed in the traditional Japanese teahouse architectural style. The rooms surround a sculpted Japanese garden. The atmosphere is one of tranquility, a pause in the downtown city.

The restaurant has been awarded one star in the Michelin Guide since 2013, a recognition of its high-quality cooking. The philosophy guiding the kitchen is rooted in onko-chishin—studying the past to create the future.

The Kaiseki

The kaiseki at Kanamean Nishitomiya is built around three concepts: the season, the vessel, and the occasion. The kitchen works with seasonal ingredients, presenting them on carefully selected tableware. The wine cellar holds about 1,000 bottles, and a sommelier is on hand to pair wines or sake with the tasting course.

The restaurant is also a member of Relais & Châteaux, the first hotel and restaurant in Kyoto to join the association.

要・Kaname: A Contemporary Counter

For a different experience, the restaurant 要・Kaname offers what the house calls "Kyoto Contemporary Kaiseki." Located between rows of traditional machiya townhouses, this space has a six-seat counter where two groups are served each evening. The cuisine here uses teppanyaki and charcoal grills, blending Japanese techniques with global ingredients. The menu features Ozaki beef from Miyazaki, seafood from Nishiki Market, and vegetables from Kamigamo in Kyoto. The counter setting allows diners to watch the preparation directly, a modern take on the inn's century-old tradition of Japanese hospitality.
