The story
On the banks of the Takano River in northern Kyoto, Kenya (研野) occupies a traditional house with a garden, offering a peaceful escape from the city’s bustle. The restaurant’s concept is "cuisine that reflects modern Japan" – a philosophy that grounds each course in seasonality and cultural awareness while letting the ingredients speak clearly.
Kenya provides two distinct settings. At the counter, guests watch the kitchen’s live preparation, feeling the rhythm of the meal unfold. The private tatami rooms (座敷) accommodate from two to sixteen people, with views of the river and garden – ideal for birthdays, memorials, or quiet celebrations. Children under fifteen are welcome only in the tatami rooms, and larger parties of five or more should contact the restaurant directly.
Kenya was awarded one Michelin star in the 2026 guide, a recognition of its high-quality Japanese cooking. The award aligns with the restaurant’s dedication to precise, thoughtful cuisine that evolves with the seasons.
Lunch courses begin at 12:00 (doors open at 11:30) and cost 22,000 yen. Dinner starts at 18:00 (doors at 17:30) for 30,000 yen, rising to 33,000 yen from July 2026. The restaurant opens its gate about 30 minutes before each seating, offering an apéritif to ease into the evening. Note that Kenya’s sister restaurant, Teruima (照今), is located in Okazaki – be sure to arrive at the correct address.
