The story

Kyoto Kitcho Arashiyama Review | Traditional Japanese Cuisine & Gault&Millau Recognition

A Legacy of Craftsmanship

Kyoto Kitcho Arashiyama has anchored traditional Japanese cooking in this quiet corner of Kyoto since founder Yogi Teiichi secured the property decades ago. The site originated from a transfer arranged by a local artisan whose cherished nine-mon lantern had deeply impressed Teiichi. That foundation of patience and material respect still guides the kitchen today under head chef Tokuyama Kunio. The approach earned the establishment eighteen points from Gault&Millau for 2026, reflecting a consistent dedication to refined technique.

The Taikōtei Room

Guests dine within the Taikōtei, a space named after a classic poem by tea master Kobori Enshu. The original structure dates to the early Meiji era and arrived at this site in 1962 through the generosity of industrialist Konosuke Matsushita. Local craftsmen completed a careful restoration in 2023 to preserve the wooden joinery and sliding screens. Large windows frame the shifting seasons of the Arashiyama landscape, grounding each meal in the surrounding environment.

Seasonal Japanese Cooking

The kitchen draws directly from tea ceremony traditions, treating each course as a measured progression rather than a static menu. Chefs prioritize ingredient integrity, letting regional produce dictate the daily preparations. This Japanese kitchen balances simplicity with meticulous plating, ensuring every element aligns with the current harvest. Diners experience the full rhythm of the year through carefully timed courses that highlight texture and temperature alongside subtle seasoning.
