Mescita Pane e Vino: Dry-Aged Wagyu Over Binchotan in Kyoto

Mescita Pane e Vino calls itself a “canteen for aged meat and natural wine.” Near Shijo Karasuma in Kyoto, this intimate Italian steakhouse is run solely by its chef, who grills dry-aged wagyu from Shiga’s renowned butcher Sakae-ya over binchotan charcoal. The result is meat with concentrated umami and a tender interior, served in straightforward, satisfying courses.

The Michelin Guide awarded Mescita Pane e Vino a Recommended distinction for 2026, recognizing its focused cooking. The menu offers two set courses: a five‑course option with two cuts of aged beef (¥6,800) and a more generous five‑course version with three cuts (¥9,900). Both include sides made from organic vegetables harvested at the chef’s family farm in Shiga – pickled, roasted, or simply dressed.

Homemade bread, leavened with natural yeast and Hokkaido wheat, accompanies the meal. The wine list is built around natural producers, each bottle chosen to match the beef’s richness.

The atmosphere is relaxed, with counter seating that welcomes solo diners. Because the chef manages every detail, reservations are essential. Mescita Pane e Vino offers a direct, personal take on Italian cuisine in Kyoto – one built on excellent ingredients, careful technique, and genuine warmth.
