The story

MOTOÏ Kyoto – Michelin-Recommended French-Japanese Restaurant

A Philosophy of Shared Harmony

At MOTOÏ in Kyoto, the guiding principle comes from the tea ceremony: shukyaku ittai – the idea that host and guest together create the time and space. This spirit of mutual respect and cooperation defines the restaurant’s approach to hospitality. Every detail, from the arrangement of the room to the progression of the meal, is designed so that the feelings of the staff and the guests blend into a single harmony. It is a quiet, attentive form of service that aims to make each moment truly yours.

French-Japanese Fusion in Kyoto

The cuisine at MOTOÏ is a natural expression of this philosophy, weaving together French techniques and Japanese ingredients with the cultural richness of Kyoto. Seasonal produce is the foundation, and the menu changes to reflect the best of each month. The lunch course, Collection de Saison, offers about ten dishes including fish and meat, while the Gourmand lunch upgrade features lobster and beef. Dinner is the full Création course, also around thirteen plates, where the flavours of the season meet Kyoto’s culinary traditions. A private room is available for parties of two to eight, with an exclusive menu.

A Recognised Dining Experience

The restaurant’s commitment to quality and harmony has earned it a place in the Michelin Guide for 2026, listed as Recommended. It is a recognition that aligns with the care taken in every dish and every interaction. The wine list is thoughtfully chosen to complement the menu, and the atmosphere remains elegant yet relaxed – elegant casual is the dress code encouraged. MOTOÏ has been welcoming guests since at least 2012, celebrating its 12th anniversary in 2024, and continues to evolve with the seasons.
