The story
In the quiet streets between Shijo and Gojo, just minutes from Kyoto's bustling center, Muromachi Kaji offers a warm retreat for those seeking thoughtful Japanese cuisine. This intimate spot, recognized with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, centres on a monthly-changing à la carte menu built around the finest seasonal ingredients.
The chef personally selects produce from central markets, crafting dishes that balance delicate flavours with playful presentation. A highlight is the otoshi hassun – a large plate filled with small bowls and dishes that reflect the season, made to be enjoyed alongside sake. The otsukuri (sashimi) arrives with inventive touches like pickled mackerel sushi and rare delicacies.
The restaurant's heart is a wide white-wood counter that seats eight, creating a calm, unhurried atmosphere. A table for four and a private room for up to four guests are also available, making it suitable for quiet dinners or small gatherings. The interior is brightened by large windows and subtle, charming tableware that adds warmth without formality.
Japanese sake changes every two to three months, featuring both well-known labels and lesser-known bottles chosen to complement the food. The relaxed vibe and attentive service have made Muromachi Kaji a favourite for locals and visitors alike.
Located a six-minute walk from Gojo Station or seven minutes from Shijo Station, Muromachi Kaji is open for dinner only, from 18:00 to 23:00 (last drinks at 22:00), and closed on Thursdays. Reservations are recommended.
