The story

Ryoriya Otaya: Bib Gourmand Kaiseki in Kyoto

A Kaiseki Restaurant on the Takase River

Ryoriya Otaya sits along Kiyamachi Street in Kyoto, with views of the Takase River from its window tables and private rooms. The restaurant describes itself as a place where guests can enjoy Kyoto’s delicate, seasonal flavours in a quiet, welcoming setting.

The kitchen is equipped with a kamado (traditional rice cooker) and a charcoal fire for grilling meat and fish, which adds a fragrant smokiness to the dishes. The cooking is rooted in Japanese tradition but leans into creativity, making full use of seasonal ingredients including fish, meat, and Kyoto vegetables.

Michelin Bib Gourmand Recognition

Ryoriya Otaya has held a Michelin Bib Gourmand award since at least 2016, a recognition that highlights good quality cooking at a reasonable price. The restaurant’s own website proudly displays this selection across multiple editions of the Michelin Guide Kyoto-Osaka. It is a mark of the consistent value and skill found here.

Courses and Atmosphere

The evening menu offers four omakase courses. The “Seasonal Omakase” (8,800 yen) gathers the restaurant’s signature dishes. The “Seasonal Recommendation” (11,000 yen) follows the calendar with the best available ingredients. The “Seasonal Utage” (13,000 yen) and “Supreme Seasonal Course” (16,500 yen) use the day’s finest produce and precise cooking techniques.

The space seats 18 people: four at the counter, eight at tables, and a sunken kotatsu private room for up to six. The counter seats offer a direct view of the kitchen, while the tables and private room overlook the river. The atmosphere is calm and inviting, suitable for both first-time visitors and regulars.

Ryoriya Otaya is a place to experience refined Japanese cuisine in a setting that feels both special and approachable. The combination of charcoal-grilled dishes, seasonal ingredients, and the quiet backdrop of the Takase River makes it a memorable stop in Kyoto.
