The story

Sambongi Shoten: Kyoto Izakaya with Charcoal Grill and Natural Wine

Charcoal and Craft in Old Kyoto

In the historic Sanbongi district, once a lively geisha quarter between the Kyoto Imperial Palace and the Kamo River, Sambongi Shoten occupies a meticulously renovated Kyoto townhouse (machiya) built over a century ago. The space is intimate: a nine-seat counter and a communal table for ten, all within wooden beams and traditional plaster walls that whisper of the city’s past.

As an izakaya, Sambongi Shoten places charcoal grilling at its heart. The kitchen uses binchotan, a high-grade white charcoal, to cook game like wild boar and venison, along with Shinshu free-range pork, Kawamata shamo chicken, and Kyoto duck. These ingredients are raised by farmers who bring clear passion to their work, and the menu changes with seasonal availability. The approach is direct: the fire does the work, letting the quality of the meat speak.

A Natural Pairing

The drink list reflects the same philosophy. Wines are natural (vin nature) – made without chemical intervention, expressing the character of their terroir. The sake selection pivots around warmed sake (kanzake), a classic choice that complements the smoky, savoury notes of the grill. This izakaya is also a place to linger over a glass at the bar, with an outdoor seating option when the weather cooperates.

Recognition and Atmosphere

Sambongi Shoten’s consistent quality earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026, an award that honours good value cooking. The accolade fits a restaurant that balances craftsmanship with approachability. The setting is relaxed yet refined – the kind of Kyoto izakaya where the counter invites conversation, and the open kitchen lets you watch the grill work. There is no pretence, just honest cooking and a thoughtful selection of drinks.
