The story
Perched on the eastern hills of Kyoto, Sanso Kyoyamato is a ryotei that has been marking time since the Heian period. The restaurant occupies a traditional sukiya-zukuri building, a style of architecture that prizes natural materials, asymmetry, and a seamless connection to the garden. Each of the private rooms looks out onto either a meticulously tended landscape or a sweeping view of the city below, changing with the seasons.
The kitchen is guided by the rhythms of the year. The chef selects the finest seasonal ingredients from across Japan, preparing them as kaiseki that aims to be felt with all five senses, not just tasted. The result is a meal that is both refined and deeply personal, a reflection of the chef’s care for each guest. The menu changes frequently, but the philosophy remains constant: to offer an experience that can only be had at Sanso Kyoyamato.
This dedication to craft has earned the restaurant two Michelin stars, a recognition of its excellent cooking. The setting is as much a part of the meal as the food itself. The private rooms, designed for a range of occasions from celebrations and anniversaries to business entertainment, offer a tranquil escape from the city. Parking is available, and children are welcome, making this a place where the highest level of Japanese cuisine can be enjoyed in a genuinely welcoming atmosphere.
