The story
Ten-you sits on a narrow alley off Fuyacho Street, a short walk from the historic Tawaraya Inn in Kyoto's Nakagyo-ku. The restaurant makes the most of Kyoto's characteristic deep plots, creating a serene passage that leads to a dining room where both counter seats and private rooms offer views of small, contemplative gardens. The counter seats ten on the upper level, allowing guests to watch the chef at work, while the first floor houses private rooms for four and six guests.
The kitchen's tempura is fried in cottonseed oil, yielding a light, clean finish that lets the seasonal ingredients speak. At lunch, the menu features a tempura bowl and a set tempura course. In the evening, the focus shifts to a kaiseki-style tempura course, a more elaborate progression that reflects the chef's careful selection of the day's best produce. Each piece—whether vegetable or seafood—is cooked with precise timing, resulting in a delicate, non-greasy texture.
Ten-you's refined approach has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026, a testament to the consistency and quality of its cooking. The dining room is air-conditioned, and the service is attentive without being intrusive. Whether seated at the counter or in a private room, guests are treated to the view of a carefully raked garden, adding a visual calm to the meal. The space is both spacious and intimate, ideal for a quiet dinner or a small gathering.
