The story
On a quiet street near Marutamachi, Vena occupies a renovated Kyoto townhouse, or machiya. The space blends Nordic vintage furniture with the warmth of a traditional wooden home, creating a setting that feels both refined and relaxed. Counter seating on the first floor offers a direct view of the kitchen, while two private rooms upstairs provide more intimate dining.
The cuisine is Italian, interpreted with a clear respect for seasonal Japanese ingredients. The kitchen focuses on handmade pasta, carefully timed grilling, and sauces that deepen rather than mask the flavour of the main ingredient. A signature dish is the hand-cut tagliolini with hairy crab and sea urchin, a combination that pairs richness with the clean brininess of the sea. Another standout is the charcoal-grilled lamb, served with a tomato compote of seasonal vegetables and an anchovy sauce that adds savoury depth.
The wine list is a point of pride. A dedicated sommelier, recognised as one of Kyoto’s top five, selects bottles that range from approachable Italian labels to rare vintage finds. The pairing is designed to complement the food without overwhelming it.
Vena received a Michelin One Star in 2026, a recognition of the kitchen’s consistent high quality. The award fits naturally with the restaurant’s philosophy: letting the ingredients speak, and serving them in a space that feels like a genuine escape from the city’s pace.
