The Potato Shack

A five generation Jersey farm home to an award winning hay barn café serving seasonal brunch, homemade bakes, and island grown produce.

The story

The Potato Shack Saint Helier | Award Winning Farm Café

A Five Generation Family Start

The Potato Shack in Saint Helier serves a thoughtful international cuisine rooted in five generations of Jersey farming. Richard and Nicki Le Boutillier originally launched the site as a simple honesty box in 2001 when they stopped exporting their own potatoes. That single decision evolved into a sprawling agricultural enterprise spanning dairy operations, a dedicated butcher, and the beloved café you see today. This quiet dedication to local farming earned a Local Gem recognition from The Good Food Guide.

Seasonal Kitchen Flair

Their international dishes lean heavily on what grows right outside the kitchen door. Drawing on broader culinary traditions, the morning menu highlights the signature Woodlands hash alongside Turkish eggs and a homemade shack shuka. The midday service shifts toward heartier plates featuring homemade merguez sausages on toasted flatbread or substantial burgers packed with locally reared Jersey beef. Every item relies on straightforward techniques and fresh ingredients.

Barn Style Gathering Space

Visitors arrive at the highest point on the island to find a structure designed specifically to resemble a traditional hay barn. The layout encourages casual dining with ample outdoor seating tucked around the central courtyard. Guests step inside for a casual meal to browse a rotating selection of homemade pastries, fresh sausage rolls, and Monmouth roasted coffee. The atmosphere stays relaxed and unpretentious throughout the day.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Located at the highest point on Jersey, Woodlands Farm has been in the Le Boutillier family for five generations and is now an expansive enterprise taking in a dairy, butchers and an honesty box selling home-grown Jersey Royals. It also sports the Potato Shack café – a beautiful construction in the style of a hay barn at the gateway to the farm. Visitors can drop by for breakfast and daytime sustenance in the shape of pastries, homemade bakes and brunch staples such as Woodlands hash, Turkish eggs or 'shack-shuka'. There are also a couple of lunch dishes including homemade merguez sausages on toasted flatbread and burgers featuring their own Jersey beef. Good Monmouth coffee too.
