The story
On Lebuh Presgrave—known in Penang Hokkien as Sa-Tiau-Lor 三条路—Communal Table by Gēn sits within the historic Seven Street Precinct. With just 24 seats arranged directly around an open kitchen, every meal here is a shared experience. From your seat, you can watch the precision of the craft while overlooking the bustling streets of Penang’s inner city.
The restaurant’s name reflects its spirit: a space where fine ingredients and heritage flavours are best enjoyed in good company. The kitchen is a playground for seasonal Malaysian produce, crafting adventurous, technique-driven dishes that challenge the boundaries of the traditional table. Plates are designed to be shared, supporting the conviviality that defines Asian dining culture.
The name gēn (根) translates to “ground roots,” a philosophy that places Malaysia’s local produce at the centre of the plate. For chef-founder Johnson Wong, the restaurant is a homecoming—a space where technical precision meets the raw soul of culture and childhood memories. Head chef Jeremy Tan and the team work closely with local farmers and breweries, and offer a curated selection of low-intervention, natural wines.
A 1% contribution is added to every bill to support Zero Foodprint Asia, funding regional farmers who adopt regenerative agriculture. It is a small collective step that connects the dining community directly to the land.
In 2026, Communal Table by Gēn was awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand, a nod to its good-quality, good-value cooking. The atmosphere is lively and warm—there is no dress code, and the boundaries between kitchen and guest disappear. Whether for a quick, inspired snack or a lingering dinner fuelled by natural wines, the restaurant celebrates the art of the shared meal.
The restaurant is also the foundation of a broader culinary portfolio, including sister ventures Wine Not—an intimate wine bar above—and Root House by gēn, located within the 1926 Heritage Hotel. But here, at the original address, the focus remains on the table: on Malaysian cuisine served with precision, warmth, and a sense of community.
