The story
In the backstreets of George Town, inside the heritage walls of Campbell House, Il Bacaro offers a taste of Venice. The name comes from the typical Venetian bacaro—a small, unpretentious tavern where friends meet for a glass of wine and cicchetti, the city’s answer to tapas. That same spirit of casual, convivial eating defines this restaurant.
Il Bacaro is proud to be Michelin Selected 2023 (and recommended for 2026), a recognition that speaks to its consistent, honest cooking. The kitchen focuses on good, freshly prepared Italian food, using locally sourced seafood and vegetables combined with 100% Italian products. Recipes come from Mamma, giving the menu a genuine, home-cooked feel.
The signature offering is Venetian Cicchetti—small plates designed for sharing over wine. These change regularly, so each visit brings something new. For heartier appetites, the menu includes traditional favourites like homemade Gnocchi and a Tiramisu that has earned its reputation. Even visitors from Napoli have praised the pizzas, a high compliment from the home of pizza itself.
Beyond the set menu, look for the ever-changing Specials board, which reflects seasonal ingredients and the chef’s daily inspiration. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, a little Italian oasis in the heart of Penang’s street-food capital. Whether you come for a light lunch of cicchetti or a full dinner of classic Italian dishes, Il Bacaro delivers a genuine taste of La Dolce Vita.
