The story

Jawi House – Peranakan Heritage Cuisine in George Town, Penang | Michelin Recommended

A Taste of Penang's Spice Route History

On Armenian Street in George Town, Jawi House celebrates a cuisine shaped by six generations of the Karim family. This is Jawi Peranakan heritage cooking, born from the marriage of Malay women with Persian, Arab, Indian, and Punjabi traders along the early spice routes. The family describes it as "food for feasting," and the cooking respects that legacy with fresh local ingredients and balanced, layered flavours.

Chef Nurilkarim, who grew up exploring Penang's diverse culinary mosaic, leads the kitchen. His philosophy is grounded in local and sustainable sourcing, drawing on Malaysia's equatorial gardens and rainforests for flowers, spices, shoots, and herbs. He honed his technique at acclaimed restaurants such as Gaa in Bangkok and Cilantro in Kuala Lumpur, experiences that inform his precise, ingredient-driven approach.

The menu is a careful iteration of Jawi Peranakan tradition. Starters include roti surai, a lacey Malay pancake with a light chicken and potato curry, and kerabu mangga, a vibrant green mango salad with torch ginger and dried shrimp. Sharing plates like the levant platter bring together Armenian salad, hummous, and baba ganoush.

Main courses highlight the cuisine's breadth. The jawi laksa lemak features flaked local tuna and mackerel in a rich coconut milk broth, while the beef rendang is braised to tenderness with galangal, turmeric leaves, and coconut milk. Aromatic biryanis—prawn, mutton, chicken, or jackfruit—come layered with herbs and served with dalca, raita, and fruit chutney. Heritage rice options like lemuni rice (cooked with vitex leaves and blue pea flowers) or kacang rice (with lentils and fresh turmeric) are available to accompany curries and masalas.

The dessert selection includes traditional sweets such as Malay caramel pudding cakes with a honeycomb texture, known as kuih gula hangus, and a sago pudding with coconut milk and palm sugar. Beverages range from a homemade spiced rose syrup sherbet to freshly squeezed juices and local teas.

Jawi House's recognition by the Michelin guide underlines the quality of this singular Peranakan dining experience in the heart of George Town.
