The story
Kayra, in Bangsar Village, Kuala Lumpur, is a family affair that began with the owner’s grandparents. They journeyed from Kerala to Malaysia in search of opportunity, and by 1949 had opened the first Kerala restaurant in Johor Bahru. That legacy of cooking—handed down through generations—is at the heart of Kayra today. Owner Meriam Sophia Alfonso describes meals as a sacred experience, and the restaurant is an organic manifestation of those cherished memories.
The menu at Kayra honours old family recipes while embracing contemporary influences. It is a blend of tradition and innovation, reflecting the aspirations of today’s diners. Among the dishes that have become favourites over the years: Prawn Mango Curry, cooked with light spices and coconut milk; K. Tikka, chicken marinated three ways and served with coin roti; and the Goodness Bowl, a wholesome plate of millet with cucumber onion salad, masala lentils, mixed thoran, grilled brinjal, hung curd raita, and coconut chamandhi. The Calicut Crunch is a vermicelli-coated ball stuffed with tapioca and shredded chicken, while the Fish Moilee Biryani features a whole seabass marinated in a shallot masala, grilled, and served on aromatic basmati rice with a rich coconut-turmeric sauce. Classic appam, served with salted gula melaka or sweet coconut milk, rounds out the offerings.
Kayra’s commitment to authentic Kerala cuisine has earned it a Michelin Recommended award for 2026, a recognition that speaks to the kitchen’s dedication and the depth of flavour in every dish. The restaurant itself is designed for both intimate meals and larger gatherings, with a private dining room available for special occasions. Whether you are exploring Indian cuisine for the first time or returning for familiar comforts, Kayra offers a dining experience that is both rooted in heritage and refreshingly modern.
