The story
Potager, situated in the lush Bamboo Hills enclave of Kuala Lumpur, has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for its refined take on French cuisine. The restaurant’s guiding spirit is Executive Chef Masashi Horiuchi, a chef whose career spans two decades in Europe and a deep reverence for the Japanese concept of kokoro — “heart” or “spirit.” He brings that philosophy to every plate, translating the work of farmers and producers into dishes that are both sensory and soulful.
Horiuchi’s training reads like a tour of Europe’s great kitchens: he worked under Philippe Groult, Adolf Blokbergen, and Georges Blanc, among others, before serving as Sous Chef at L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon in London. At Potager, he collaborates closely with Head Chef Yeoh Leng Chee, who blends classical French techniques with the flavours of his Malaysian roots, and Executive Pastry Sous Chef Nico Ooi, whose desserts reinterpret tropical fruits with playful precision.
The restaurant’s design centres on a show kitchen, encouraging guests to watch the craft unfold. The experience is built around tasting menus — a five-course lunch and an eight-course dinner — each designed to unfold over a leisurely 90 to 180 minutes. The kitchen’s philosophy, rooted in the Japanese proverb ichigo ichie, urges diners to slow down and savour each moment as a once-in-a-lifetime encounter. The result is a French dining experience that feels both rigorous and intimate, where the purity of seasonal ingredients is allowed to speak for itself.
