The story
Tartarun is not a restaurant that arrived fully formed; it grew. Born in the small fishing village of Marsaxlokk, it is the continuation of a family legacy built on a profound reverence for fish and thoughtful craft. What began as the family’s restaurant, once called Harbour Lights, evolved naturally into Tartarun. Brothers Stephen and James run it together—Stephen guides guests through wine and conversation in the dining room, while James, driven by curiosity since childhood, brings soul to every dish.
The setting is genuine: the hum of Marsaxlokk’s harbour, boats swaying gently, the day’s catch glistening in the morning light. Since 2009, Tartarun has stayed true to its roots, sourcing locally caught fish and treating it with care. The cooking blends Mediterranean heart with Japanese nuance—think prawn tartar with iberico ham croustade, sudachi, and confit kombu, or ponzu-marinated tuna on brioche with crème fraîche and furikake. Starters include pink prawn carpaccio with fleur de sel and white soy, and grilled octopus with lardo, togarashi, and caponata. The menu also offers pasta like tagliatelle with fish ragu and linguine with guanciale and clams.
This is seafood-focused cooking that is both familiar and subtly elevated.
