The story
Tmun Restaurant began in 1987 in Xlendi, founded by Jane and Leli Buttigieg. Jane's talent in the kitchen and Leli's front-of-house presence set the stage for their son, Paul, to learn the craft. In 2009, the restaurant moved to Mġarr Harbour on the island of Gozo, where Chef Paul Buttigieg took over the kitchen. The family team has become a formidable presence in the Maltese restaurant scene, earning Tmun a Michelin Recommended award.
Chef Paul Buttigieg's path was set by the age of 16, shaped by watching his mother cook. He is now one of Gozo's most creative chefs. His menu reflects the island's position on historic maritime trading routes between Europe and Asia. This influence is evident in the subtle yet charismatic use of herbs and Asian spices in the Mediterranean seafood dishes. As Chef Paul says, "I enjoy the creative side of being a Chef. Inventing new dishes, and seeing new produce coming in, which determines my menu."
Tmun serves artfully plated Mediterranean seafood, fish, and meat dishes. The menus change seasonally to reflect the freshest local ingredients. Standout dishes include the Day’s Catch Ceviche with leche de tigre, and the signature Jane’s Cheesecake, named after Chef Paul's mother. The Michelin Inspector who selected it noted its "classic, cookie crumb base and light, sweet topping." The menu also features options like Balinese Porchetta and Char-Grilled US Prime Striploin Steak, showing the breadth of the kitchen's skill.
