The story
At Grotto Tavern, the kitchen follows a philosophy shaped by deep respect for ingredient, season, and place. This commitment to modern cuisine is rooted in a farm-to-table approach, working closely with local Maltese growers to source produce at its peak. Each dish combines Mediterranean influence with modern technique, designed with precision and restraint to highlight natural flavour and balance.
The restaurant is housed within the character of a historic Maltese home, beside a natural cave and a World War II shelter. This setting brings together heritage, atmosphere, and contemporary fine dining in a uniquely intimate way. A thoughtful transformation of the space preserves its soul while embracing a darker, refined aesthetic — warm hospitality and considered design meet ambitious cooking.
Diners can choose from a tasting menu that showcases this seasonal philosophy. Dishes like Blue Fin Tuna with fennel tart and coal oil, a snail ragout doughnut with parsley chilli garlic, or the Ġiżwita — a cheese ravioli with fermented grape, whey, and grape skin — demonstrate the kitchen’s precision. Other highlights include seabass with prawn and fish jus, and a pork fillet with blood pudding, onion, and lardo. Desserts such as roasted vanilla ice cream with almond sablé and strawberry, or an orange pâte de fruit with verbena sugar, close the meal on a refined note. Two menu lengths are offered, at €75 and €95 per person.
This dedication to quality and place has earned Grotto Tavern a place in the 2026 Michelin Guide as a Recommended restaurant — a recognition of its ambitious yet grounded cooking in a setting that feels both timeless and immersive.
