The story

Caracol de Mar: Contemporary Mexican Seafood in Mexico City's Condesa

Sea and Land, Reimagined

At Caracol de Mar, the kitchen navigates unexplored currents of contemporary Mexican cuisine. The restaurant, which earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for good quality, good value cooking, brings together the best of the sea and the countryside in a polished, relaxed setting on Campeche Street in Condesa.

The space itself is contemporary and inviting, with both air-conditioned indoor seating and an outdoor terrace. But the real draw is the cooking: a menu that shifts with the seasons, highlighting the freshest seafood and produce from across Mexico. The kitchen works with “pescados y mariscos de temporada,” so each visit offers something new.

What’s on the Plate

The menu is divided into cold and hot dishes, plus sharing plates and desserts. Cold starters include a ceviche of almeja chocolata with cilantro and hierbabuena, a tostada de atún with furikake and lemon zest, and a crudo de camarón with salsa macha, peanuts, and radish. For something more substantial, the tiradito tibio de ventresca de atún comes in a warm escabeche of chile güero.

Hot dishes range from tacos de esmedregal estilo Ensenada (with cabbage, avocado, and morita chile mayonnaise) to pulpo al carbón with frijoles estilo Sinaloense, and a costilla de res braseada in recado negro with parsnip purée. Sharing plates include a whole grilled fish a la talla Contramar style, camarones al ajillo with guajillo and focaccia, and a camote a las brasas with black bone marrow sauce.

A Celebration of Mexican Flavors

The cooking is rooted in Mexican traditions but never feels bound by them. A tostada de coco with avocado and chintextle sits alongside a ceviche nikkei de atún with soy and jalapeño. The flavors are bold, precise, and deeply satisfying. For dessert, the tamal de chocolate with cacao nibs and hoja santa ice cream is a fitting finish.

Caracol de Mar is a place where the sea and the land meet in every dish, and where the spirit of contemporary Mexican cooking shines.
