The story
In the historic Barrio de Xochimilco of Oaxaca City, Ancestral Cocina Tradicional has been serving the flavors of Oaxaca since 2017. Chef Miguel Mijangos and his team of 35 collaborators focus on creating sensory experiences rooted in the region’s traditional gastronomy, using native ingredients that speak to the land and its culture. The restaurant’s commitment to authenticity and quality has earned it a Michelin recommendation in 2024 and 2025, as well as recognition among the top 250 restaurants in Mexico by the Guía México Gastronómico.
The menu is a celebration of Oaxacan staples, prepared with care and respect for technique. Breakfast offerings include huevos rancheros, chilaquiles with mole amarillo, and enfrijoladas topped with cecina enchilada or tasajo. From the comal come memelas, quesadillas with quesillo and huitlacoche, and empanadas filled with mole verde or mole amarillo. For heartier meals, there are tacos de coloradito, enmoladas, and a desayuno ranchero with beans, cheese, avocado, and your choice of grilled meat.
The drink list is equally rooted in tradition: café de olla, chocolate de agua, and seasonal atoles like champurrado on weekends. Desserts such as gaznate de tejate and chocomezal offer a sweet finish with local character. The atmosphere reflects the folkloric spirit of Oaxaca, making every meal feel like a genuine encounter with the region’s culinary heritage. Whether you come for breakfast or dinner, Ancestral Cocina Tradicional delivers a memorable taste of authentic Mexican cuisine in a setting that honors its roots.
