The story
Omakai began in September 2019 as a casual food truck in the historic center of San José del Cabo, born during the pandemic to offer a safe, open-air sushi experience. The warm reception and demand for space soon led to a full kitchen and a permanent home. Today, the restaurant occupies a hacienda-style house where traditional Japanese decor meets sophisticated comfort, creating an atmosphere that is both elegant and inviting. The name itself comes from omakase – “to leave it to the chef” – and that spirit of trust and guidance runs through every dish.
Omakai honors traditional Japanese haute cuisine while sourcing exceptional ingredients: fresh bluefin tuna, farmed seafood, and imports like hamachi and uni. The menu spans nigiri, sashimi, hand rolls, and hot stone dishes. Standouts include the Tostada Nori Frita – fried nori with akami tartare and seared truffle – and the Crispy Rice skewers topped with uni, ikura, or caviar. For a dramatic finish, the Piedra Caliente offers a choice of salmon, Rib Eye Prime, or A5 Wagyu cooked tableside on a hot stone with miso butter.
The sushi selection is extensive: from classic nigiri like chutoro and otoro to creative uramaki like the Omakai Roll (tempura shrimp, avocado, basil, wrapped in spicy fish of the day). The Platón Maguro presents six nigiri of bluefin tuna in three grades. For sashimi lovers, the Truffle Sashimi combines salmon, akami, and kampachi with ponzu, fresh truffle, and caviar.
Omakai’s dedication to quality and service earned it a place in the Michelin Guide for 2024 and 2025, and it continues to be recommended for 2026. The dining room, with air conditioning and outdoor seating, balances fine dining with a relaxed warmth. Whether you choose the chef’s omakase or explore the menu on your own, Omakai delivers a sensory and visual experience that has made it a must-visit in Los Cabos.
